The only way to change how you lead is to see yourself clearly.
Leadership Trust was built on a simple idea:
that leaders change when they see themselves clearly.
David Gilbert-Smith, a former SAS Major, believed that leading well required something most organisations never asked their people to develop - the self-awareness to understand how you actually come across, and the honesty to change what you find.
He called it leadership from the inside out.
Working with behavioural psychologist Janet Richardson, he built an environment where leaders could discover, honestly, how they actually led - not through theory, but through direct experience with peers who would tell them the truth. The combination of military discipline and behavioural science produced something no other organisation has replicated in fifty years.
That conviction shapes every programme Leadership Trust runs today.
Every leader who comes through Leadership Trust follows the same path.
Immersion
Step out of role, routine and hierarchy. Create the space to focus fully on how you lead.
Experience
Real challenges - outdoors, under pressure, with others watching - surface how you actually lead.
Seeing
Through lived experience and the honest reflections of the people around you, you see yourself as you are actually experienced.
Understanding
Patterns, strengths, limits and impact become clear. Often for the first time.
Growth
New choices become possible. Responses that were automatic begin to shift.
Leadership
How you lead yourself and others changes - in behaviour, in relationships, in the way you show up.
Impact
Stronger leadership shows up in your teams, your culture and your organisation's performance.
Experience first. Theory when it is useful.
Most leadership development starts with a model. A framework is explained, a concept is taught, and leaders are asked to apply it. Research consistently shows that only 10 to 15 percent of that learning transfers to real behaviour back at work.
Leadership Trust works the other way. Leaders are placed in real situations first - working with others, solving problems, making decisions under genuine pressure, in challenges that cannot be navigated by rank or habit. How they actually lead becomes visible in a way the normal working environment never allows.
Theory is introduced to help make sense of what is already happening - at the moment when it is most likely to land and least likely to be forgotten.
This difference matters. It is the reason the change lasts.
The feedback that changes leaders comes from people who have experienced their leadership.
At Chelsea Parkfields - Leadership Trust's private residential estate in Herefordshire, far enough from normal working life that the habits and hierarchies of the office do not follow you - leaders work alongside peers from different organisations and sectors. People with no history with them and no reason to soften what they see.
Those peers experience their leadership directly, in real time, and tell them honestly what they see. That feedback lands differently from anything a coach or a 360 tool can produce. It is impossible to dismiss because it comes from direct experience. The change lasts because the evidence is real.
Skilled facilitators hold the environment throughout - creating the conditions for honest feedback to be given and received.
Leaders today are expected to make faster decisions, align teams quickly and lead through constant uncertainty.
Those capabilities are not built through theory or instruction. They come from genuine self-knowledge - the ability to understand how you lead, how others experience you, and what needs to change.
As AI takes over the transfer of knowledge and information, those human capabilities become the differentiator. They are exactly what Leadership Trust has been developing for fifty years.
Tell us about your organisation and your leaders. We'll tell you honestly what will work and why.
