Implementing leadership solutions at Chiltern Railways

Implementing Leadership Solutions to Address Operational Challenges

Chiltern Railways, established in 1996, offers commuter and regional rail services from its London base at Marylebone along the M40 corridor to destinations in Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Warwickshire and Worcestershire and the West Midlands.

In response to challenges with service quality, operational issues and customer complaints, Managing Director Rob Brighouse sought to strengthen leadership and management skills throughout the organisation with the help of the Leadership Trust.

The Solution: Strengthening Leadership Skills

Chiltern embarked on a seven-year partnership with the Leadership Trust to implement impactful leadership solutions to support their mission to strengthen leadership skills and drive better results.

A Comprehensive Approach

Between 2007 and 2014, several key members of the management and board teams participated in the Leadership Trust’s flagship Leadership in Management programme, enhancing their leadership skills through an intensive and eye-opening experience.

In 2011, they took part in a bespoke one day ‘Executive Team Leadership Event’ that focused on the leadership of the board.  This event proved instrumental in fostering individual and team leadership, enhancing relationships, and aligning communication within the team. It enabled the resolution of critical business issues and the development of a unified purpose and strategy.

Having been sceptical beforehand, I found it very worthwhile and helpful in managing my team more effectively.

Additionally, between 2012 and 2014, a series of one-day leadership development programmes were initiated to improve team performance by reinforcing corporate values and language.

Partnership Impact

As the partnership continues, Chiltern Railways has seen ongoing success in leadership development and performance improvement. Former Managing Director Rob Brighouse, now a Non-Executive Director at Network Rail, maintains a positive relationship with the Leadership Trust, acknowledging the impact of the collaboration on Chiltern Railways’ success.
